April Bowl & Hatch Peak
Location: Hatcher Pass
Distance: 1.2 miles uphill one way
This is an awesome hike if you don't want to go miles and miles to be rewarded with stunning views. The trail starts with some switchbacks and then follows a ridge around the bowl. Two thumbs up!

Bodenburg Butte
Location: Butte
Distance: 1.5 miles uphill one way
I like this hike because it has two sides that are easily accessible, depending on how hard you want to work. The north side trail is longer but less steep. There are a lot of stairs that are well maintained and a few good look-out points along the way.
The south side trail is more steep and not maintained. We got really dirty because it had been dry.
Either way, be prepared for a nice view of Matanuska Glacier and possibly some wind. Bring water and some snacks to enjoy at the top. I've done this hike many times, and I never get sick of it. Two thumbs up!

Gold Cord Lake Trail
Location: Hatcher Pass
Distance: 1 mile one way
We had to also walk up the road a mile or so because the gate wasn't open yet (opens June 15th), but that was fine since we were doing a short hike. Still lots of snow patches in the beginning of June and a few muggy spots where our feet got wet, but again, this is manageable when you know your car is only a mile away. Can't wait to check this trail out again in a month or two. Would be a great location for a picnic, family outting, etc., since the hike is short and pretty easy. Two thumbs up!

Gold Mint Trail/Hut
Location: Hatcher Pass
Distance: 8-9 miles one way
Difficulty: Moderate, mostly flat but some scrambling and incline at the end
This is a great weekend hike/backpacking trip. You can pack a tent or plan to stay in the hut, but keep in mind, the hut is first come, first serve and shared. See link here about hut and becoming a member so you have access to it: http://www.mtnclubak.org/index.cfm/Huts/MCA-Hut-System/29
There were a few very muddy spots, so bring extra socks/shoes. Some sections were also pretty overgrown so layers would be good. There is lots of access to water in the valley and near the hut; even a lake to swim in if you're up for an extra climb at the end. Two thumbs up!

Lazy Mountain
Location: Palmer
Distance: 2.5 miles uphill one way
Difficulty: Difficult, especially considering the name
Not for the lazy at all! Considered "short" because it is only five miles round trip, but the steepness makes up for it. It took us longer than expected, and there were many false peaks. Let's just say that after this hike, Nathan said he will be researching the descriptions more closely before he agrees. Nevertheless, two thumbs up for the view!

Matanuska Glacier
Location: North of Palmer about 50 miles
Distance: 1/2 mile to glacier
Difficulty: EasyTwo thumbs up! You have to pay per person (tourist trap) but this "hike" is worth it. You basically walk from the parking lot to the glacier and can roam around as much as you want. This walk is family and pet friendly, as long as you have stable shoes and are smart about turning around before it gets too slick. You can also bring ice bugs or crampons to explore more.
It's easy to miss the turn, so here are some general directions:
At about mile 100 on the highway, there is a rest stop/viewing area. Continue for another mile or so. You will see a small store and take a right just after it. The name of the street is Glacier Park (or something like that). Follow the road across the river and into the valley. Once you get to another store, you will have to get out and pay per person. The cost is now $25 per person or $20 for Alaska residents. It is worth it as long as you have time to explore the glacier. I would also recommend packing a lunch at eating with this view:

Reed Lakes
Location: Hatcher's Pass
Distance: 4.5 miles one way (as long as the Archangel Road gate is open; if not, it is 7.5)
Difficulty: Moderate due to boulder scramble
This is one of my favorite hikes for many reasons! The first part of the hike (including Archangel) is pretty easy, the rock scramble adds in a little bit of a challenge (especially if you are carrying extra weight), and the end is worth the trek: it is so quiet and beautiful when you make it to the lakes; you practically have the area to yourself. If there are other hikers, it's easy enough to hike to the upper lake and scout out a serene area to relax.
We completed this over two days, camping out one night near lower lake. You could easily enjoy another day exploring in the area if you have the time.
I don't think I would recommend this hike for a day trip if the Archangel gate is not open. You would have to rush there and back (15 miles), which wouldn't leave you much time to enjoy the lakes.

Double thumbs up for this hike (triple if it is possible)! Although if everyone starts doing this hike, it may become crowded...so really, it's not that great ;)

Reflections Lake
Location: Near Knik River Bridge
Distance: One mile loop
Difficulty: Easy
Nice walk around the lake. Great for families, picnics, etc. Two thumbs up!

Skyscraper Mountain
Location: Hatchers Pass
Distance: One mile uphill
Difficulty: Moderate (short but steep)
Epic views from the top, but initially quite steep, and footing isn't great. But don't let that scare you--this hike was well worth it! Once you get past the first hump/half mile, the elevation gain is more gradual. Make sure you wear good shoes (oops)! Two thumbs ups!!
